Synopsis
Traditionally, this Victorian riches-to-rags story is set in England, and revolves around Sara Crewe, a privileged, free-spirited girl who is left in a prestigious London boarding school while her father goes off to fight in the Boer Wars in Africa. Filled with wild stories and a playful attitude, the unconventional Sara becomes popular amongst her classmates but quickly comes into conflict with the harsh headmistress, Miss Minchin, who attempts to quash the child's individuality. When Sara receives news of her father's death, she is forced into the life of a servant, and must live in a cold, dark garret. Instead of pitying herself, Sara befriends her fellow servants and turns to the power of her imagination in order to maintain hope for the future. Westview’s production takes a novel approach and is set in both India and in New York City and has been “updated” to 1929 — just before the Stock Market Crash and the onset of the Great Depression. Come celebrate the healing power of love in this classic Children’s tale.
